about

Not returning to work after a weekend spike of COVID cases, I wrote the song ‘Walk out of here’ which gave rise during lockdown to the rest of these songs and EP. Collaborating online, Phil and I channeled the emotions assailing us over the months which followed and brought this group of songs to life. Inspired by prog and doom, drone and pop, we explored—very roughly—the emotional wave (the so-called five stages) that a person might go through when suffering from grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. The Latin title (approximating to ‘calm from chaos’) was an attempt to give a name to this series of songs/emotions/observations, while also alluding to our shared love of games (i.e. an alea was a Roman die) and embracing the metaphor of life as a game. This is far from perfect (but then nothing is), but it is a true record—as much as there can be such a thing—of a tumultuous, though hugely creative, time in our lives. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have.
